CEO Out after ‘Lake America’ Post

The CEO of Family First Credit Union is out after sharing a photo of her family in “Lake America” sweatshirts.

Jane Smith, who led the Saginaw-based credit union, said the AI-generated image was a joke about President Trump’s order renaming Lake Ontario. She said it was later reposted publicly without its AI label.

The credit union named chief operations officer Jason Acosta interim CEO but hasn’t said whether Smith quit or was fired. Its board said state law bars it from discussing her departure.

Smith said she received death threats and cut short a trip to Halifax. The credit union apologized for the “concern, disappointment and pain” the situation caused.

Plant Fire Cuts South Haven Power

A fire at a South Haven plastics plant Friday led city officials to shut off power to the entire city.

The blaze broke out around 3:45 p.m. at East Jordan Plastics, which had tens of thousands of pallets of plastic waste on site. All workers got out safely, and no one was hurt.

The fire grew to five alarms and took about 2 million gallons of water to put out. Its cause is under investigation, though it appears to have started outside the plant near a propane filling station.

Power has since been restored. The homecoming game against Constantine was moved to Saturday at noon at Watervliet High School.

Wolverines Fall on Last-Second Touchdown

No. 18 Michigan fell 20-19 to No. 17 Iowa on a last-play touchdown, ending a 47-game winning streak when leading at halftime.

The Hawkeyes drove 91 yards in the final 1:46, helped by a Michigan unnecessary roughness penalty on third down, before Hank Brown hit Reece Vander Zee from 16 yards out on the final snap.

The finish spoiled a halftime show featuring cellist Yo-Yo Ma, who joined the marching band for music from The Lord of the Rings.

On a rough Saturday statewide, Michigan State fell 31-13 to Nebraska after losing standouts Cam Edwards and Jordan Hall to injuries, and Western Michigan lost 32-7 at home to Boise State.
