650,000 Face New Medicaid Work Rules

Michigan is notifying 650,000 residents that they’ll soon need to work, attend school, or volunteer to meet new Medicaid requirements, or qualify for an exemption.

The rules, from last year’s federal budget law, apply to certain adults ages 19 to 64 in the state’s Medicaid expansion and take effect Jan. 1. Advocates worry some eligible residents could lose coverage because of the added paperwork and verification requirements.

To ease the transition, the state has begun alerting enrollees and has hired more than 400 workers to help beneficiaries with an online tool due next month showing who’s affected and what documentation they’ll need.

The requirements roll out across the U.S. in January, and federal officials in June tightened the standard for who counts as too medically frail to be exempt.

Jury Awards $897M in Test-Track Crash

An Oakland County jury awarded nearly $897 million to the family of a boy severely hurt when a test car crashed into a guardrail at a 2023 Auburn Hills STEM field trip.

The children were watching a demonstration at a Continental test track when the driver accelerated out of a turn, lost control, and hit them. The vehicle was a Ford Mustang Dark Horse prototype on loan to Continental.

The families’ suit named Continental, Ford, the driver, and the Detroit Area Pre-College Engineering Program, or DAPCEP, whose program the children were participating in during the field trip. The suit alleged gross negligence, and a second child’s family was awarded $32.7 million.

Continental, now known as Aumovio, did not respond to a request for comment, and DAPCEP said the claims against it were dismissed with prejudice.

U-M Opens ‘Tumor Destroyer’ Cancer Center

The University of Michigan has opened a first-of-its-kind, $10 million center in Ann Arbor built around histotripsy, a treatment that destroys tumors with focused sound waves and no incisions.

Without surgery, radiation, or chemotherapy, the technique uses precise ultrasound to form bubble clouds inside a tumor that break apart its cells, leaving debris the body absorbs or clears on its own.

First developed at U-M in 2002, histotripsy won FDA authorization for liver tumors in 2023, and startup HistoSonics has since placed more than 130 systems worldwide and treated over 5,000 patients.

The new center will share its equipment and expertise with outside researchers at no cost, with research targeting cancers of the pancreas, breast, prostate, and brain. U-M officials say FDA authorization for kidney and pancreatic tumors is expected within the next year.

That scam call wasn’t random

Scammers don’t just guess your number. They buy personal information from data brokers, companies that sell your phone number, home address, relatives’ info, and more online.

That’s how a random scam call can turn into phishing, impersonation, identity theft, or someone knowing more about you than they should.

That’s why I recommend Incogni. It removes your personal information from these databases and keeps removing it automatically.
