$75M Suit Accuses Ex-Warren Officer

A woman filed a $75 million federal lawsuit alleging a former Warren police officer sexually assaulted her while on duty after she called police to report domestic violence.

Lisa Harrison says Officer Elmondo Smith got her phone number after responding to her June 2025 call, then harassed her and assaulted her July 9, 2025, while in uniform and driving a marked cruiser.

The Macomb County Sheriff’s Office investigated, but the county prosecutor declined to file charges. The prosecutor can reconsider.

Warren’s police commissioner said Smith was placed on leave and stripped of his badge and gun the day the allegation was reported. Smith is no longer with the department.

Fain Wins Second Term Leading UAW

United Auto Workers President Shawn Fain declared victory Friday in his bid for a second term, easily topping five challengers in preliminary results released by a federal monitor.

Fain has faced intense scrutiny over allegations that he can be hotheaded and vindictive. The union remains under a court-appointed monitor after a corruption scandal settled in 2021.

The win comes as the UAW works to reassert its political power in Michigan, where members are split over which party best serves them. About 113,000 members voted early in the August primary, the union said.

The union has endorsed Abdul El-Sayed, D, in the U.S. Senate race, while the Detroit Three automakers are watching ahead of 2028 contract talks.

Noisy Lab Sparked Cancer Breakthrough

University of Michigan engineering professor Zhen Xu, co-inventor of the soundwave cancer treatment histotripsy, has won the 2026 Golden Goose Award.

The national award honors federally funded research that seemed odd at first. Xu’s breakthrough came in 2002, when as a U-M graduate student she discovered an ultrasound pulse sequence that could liquefy tissue while trying to quiet noisy lab equipment.

The Food and Drug Administration approved histotripsy for liver tumors in October 2023, and thousands of patients have been treated.

Xu co-founded HistoSonics, now valued at $3.75 billion, and directs U-M’s new Histotripsy Center.
