West Michigan Tourism Weathers Canadian Drop

West Michigan’s tourism has stayed strong through a steep decline in Canadian travel, even as the Detroit area on the other side of the state absorbs a roughly 20% drop in Canadian travel this year.

A Statistics Canada report found Canadian trips that included a U.S. visit fell 10.6% in the first quarter, following a 25.4% drop in Canadian-resident return border crossings from the U.S. across all of 2025. Spending in the U.S. slid 13.6% to $5 billion.

The heaviest losses have hit near the border, where Detroit hotels and restaurants have felt the decline more directly. West Michigan Tourist Association director David Lorenz said his region draws few Canadian visitors to begin with and has leaned on new attractions like the Grand Rapids amphitheater.

At Social Misfits in downtown Grand Rapids, General Manager Rylee Powell said this has been one of the business’s best summers. “If anything, it’s been busier this year because of the amphitheater,” Powell said.

Comerica Accounts Move to Fifth Third

Comerica customers’ accounts complete their transition to Fifth Third Bank today, following a merger that closed in February.

The $10.9 billion all-stock deal made Fifth Third the largest bank in Michigan and brings more than 70 branch closures. Steve Davis, Fifth Third’s regional market president for Michigan, said Fifth Third will still rank first in branches in Detroit and Southeast Michigan.

Some online and mobile banking services will be limited during the transfer, though the bank says customers will keep access to their money through debit cards and ATMs.

Davis said most customers only need to log in to the Fifth Third app or website today and set a new user ID and password. Debit cards, direct deposits, and automatic payments carry over.
