Question: Michigan’s capital has sat in Lansing since 1847, but it started out in Detroit. What drove lawmakers to move the seat of government to a remote, forested township in the state’s interior?
Answer: Safety and a more central location. Detroit sat right across the river from British-controlled Canada, which had captured the city during the War of 1812, so there was a push to put the capital in the state’s protected interior. In 1847 lawmakers picked the Township of Lansing, then a wilderness settlement of fewer than 20 people.
