Vance Headlines Michigan GOP Rally

Vice President JD Vance headlined a Republican campaign rally in Sterling Heights on Monday, uniting Michigan’s 2026 GOP ticket roughly two months before the midterms.

The pro-Trump super PAC MAGA Inc. hosted the rally at a Macomb County manufacturing plant, where Vance appeared with gubernatorial nominee John James, Senate nominee Mike Rogers and other Republican candidates and officials. FOX 2 reported it marked the first time Vance appeared in Michigan alongside the party’s statewide candidates.

The visit came days after Trump announced 50% tariffs on Canadian auto and steel imports, set to take effect Jan. 1. Michigan Democrats argue the tariffs are hitting the state harder than any other state.

Michigan Democrats accused the Republican candidates of “rubber-stamping” Trump’s agenda, while the RNC said Vance and Trump were “leading the charge” for the GOP ticket. With open races for governor, U.S. Senate and other statewide offices, Michigan is a top midterm battleground.

Township Relief Bills Stall In Lansing

As Michigan’s rural townships struggle to fill elected posts and cover their costs, legislation meant to help them is going nowhere in Lansing.

One measure, House Bill 5717, would let a township contract with a certified outsider to run elections when the clerk’s seat is vacant or the clerk isn’t qualified to run elections. It cleared the Republican-led House in May but has since stalled in the Senate.

A separate pair of bills from Reps. Bill Schuette, R-Midland, and Amos O’Neal, D-Saginaw, would spend $3.5 million on shared finance, human resources, and tech help. Introduced a year ago, they have never received a hearing.

The Michigan Township Association backs the clerk fix but resists bigger changes, with director Tom Hickson saying the vast majority of the state’s 1,240 townships are doing fine. Others, including the Citizens Research Council of Michigan, warn a reckoning looms without deeper reform, like merging small townships.

Michigan Ranks Second For Childfree Adults

A new Michigan State University study ranks Michigan second in the nation for ‘childfree’ adults, people who don’t have children and don’t want them.

The peer-reviewed study put Michigan at 19.9%, behind California at 22%, while Louisiana and the Dakotas were among the lowest, near 10%. Researchers drew on a 2024 survey of more than 20,000 adults across all 50 states.

Co-author Zachary Neal said the pattern isn’t simply coastal or urban and can’t be fully explained by economics. Researchers found that individual characteristics such as age and marital status mattered more than state-level factors such as cost of living or reproductive-rights policies.

Neal called childfree adults a large but often “hidden” group. Researchers are still working to understand what drives the differences among states.
