Question: Michigan’s men’s basketball team won the 2026 NCAA championship. In what year did the Wolverines claim their only previous national title?

Answer: 1989. Michigan won its first national championship on April 3, 1989, edging Seton Hall 80-79 in overtime when Rumeal Robinson sank two free throws with three seconds left. Interim coach Steve Fisher, promoted days before the tournament, and Flint-born star Glen Rice led the run. It stood as the Wolverines’ only crown until 2026.
