Driver Charged in Teen’s Death

An 18-year-old Traverse City man was arraigned Friday on a second-degree murder charge in the Oct. 3 crash that took the life of 17-year-old Jason Soloman on Old Mission Peninsula.

Investigators say Jackson Lakies had been drinking and that vehicle data shows his car traveling nearly 129 mph as it approached a curve shortly before leaving the road. He also faces a charge of drunken driving causing death and was denied bond.

Soloman was a student at Traverse City Central High School and played on the football team.

The Grand Traverse County Prosecutor’s Office offered condolences to his family, friends, and classmates. Lakies’ preliminary exam is set for Nov. 23.

Indiana Spoils Carr’s First Start

No. 6 Indiana beat Michigan 13-6 in overtime on Saturday, spoiling true freshman Tommy Carr’s first start and winning at the Big House for the first time since 1967.

Carr was sacked four times and turned the ball over twice, and his final fourth-down pass hit the turf just outside the end zone.

Carr, the grandson of 1997 national title coach Lloyd Carr, earned the start after sparking a 21-18 comeback over Penn State the week before.

Out West, Michigan State turned to its own true freshman, East Kentwood’s Kayd Coffman, for his first career start at No. 9 UCLA in the Rose Bowl.

The Spartans lost 28-10. Coffman finished 4-of-10 passing for 42 yards, a touchdown, and an interception before Leo Hannan took over in the fourth quarter.

Veteran Family Gets New Home

A military veteran’s family got the keys to a brand-new home Friday at the VFW National Home in Eaton Rapids, walking through it for the first time at a ribbon cutting.

It’s the 44th house on the campus, and crews built it in 90 days after the project was funded in July. A second home, called the “Florida Two” house, will be dedicated in early November.

The National Home dates to 1925, when cattleman Corey Spencer donated 472 acres near Eaton Rapids. The first family, a mother and her six children, moved in that March.

Families can live there for free while they get back on their feet.

The Flyover

A large prison system. A deeply personal gift.

Michigan has one of the Midwest’s older, larger prison systems. The scale can make it difficult to see the individual people inside, each with a past, a present, and questions about what comes next.

Among them are men and women who want to read the Bible.

Through Prison Fellowship, you can help provide access to God’s Word for someone who doesn’t have a copy of their own. It’s a gift they can open during quiet hours, turn to with difficult questions, and return to for encouragement.

You don’t have to understand the entire prison system to make a personal difference. You can help one person have a place to start.

Help provide a Bible today.
