Dam Safety Overhaul Nears Whitmer’s Desk

Two bills to overhaul Michigan’s dam safety laws are on the brink of reaching Gov. Gretchen Whitmer after clearing the Senate this week.

The push began after the 2020 Edenville and Sanford dam failures and gained urgency this spring, when heavy snowmelt and rain raised concerns about dams in northern Michigan.

Michigan’s standards are among the nation’s weakest, and more than 100,000 residents live below a high- or significant-hazard dam.

The bills would put every dam under state environmental regulators, with comprehensive inspections every 10 years. Senate Bill 947 now heads to Whitmer, while House Bill 5485 needs a final House vote.

Google Data Center Power Deal Approved

State regulators approved DTE Energy’s contracts to power a Google data center in Van Buren Township, with protections meant to keep other customers from paying its costs.

The unanimous vote made the 1-gigawatt project Michigan’s first hyperscale data center deal decided through a contested case.

Google will also pay for DTE to build up to 1,600 megawatts of renewable energy and 480 megawatts of battery storage. The same day, Wayne County commissioners voted to override County Executive Warren Evans’ veto of tax incentives for the project.

DTE says other customers will see a $1.7 billion benefit over 20 years. The data center is expected to start service in December 2027.

Kroger Puts Workers in Uniform

Workers in Kroger’s 120 Michigan stores are now wearing new uniforms featuring the company’s logo.

Store employees wear a Kroger logo T-shirt or polo in blue, red, or black, depending on their division, while managers wear button-down shirts or quarter-zip jackets. It’s the company’s first broad uniform change in about a decade.

Employees previously wore their own clothes under a company apron. The aprons got an update too, with straps that cross in an X after workers complained the old design irritated their necks.

The change affects nearly 400,000 employees nationwide. “Associates appreciate the fit and the cohesive look, and customers are telling us our teams are easier to find,” a Kroger spokesperson said.
