Proposal 2 Targets Utility, Contractor Cash

Michigan voters will decide Nov. 3 whether to ban political donations to state candidates from utility companies and certain government contractors.

Proposal 2 would bar contributions from DTE Energy, Consumers Energy, and companies with more than $250,000 in state contracts, along with immediate family members and others closely connected to them.

Groups running political ads would also have to disclose donors giving more than $100. If voters approve it, lawmakers would need a three-fourths supermajority to change it.

Supporters say corporate money drowns out voters, while opponents, including Consumers Energy, argue it violates free speech and would shift influence to out-of-state donors.

Lloyd Carr’s Grandson Rescues Michigan

The grandson of former Michigan coach Lloyd Carr came off the bench to lead the Wolverines to a 21-18 win over Penn State.

Tommy Carr replaced Bryce Underwood, who had thrown two interceptions, at halftime with Michigan trailing 3-0. Carr led two third-quarter scores and ran 12 yards for a fourth-quarter touchdown, sparing Michigan its first 0-3 Big Ten start since 1967.

Western Michigan kept the Victory Cannon with a 21-14 win at Central Michigan, sealed by Daeh McCullough’s interception on the final play.

Michigan State lost its fifth straight game, 24-21 to No. 25 Northwestern, on a last-second field goal.

Spooky Season Hits Full Swing

Halloween is still 13 days away, but Michigan isn’t waiting, with spooky events lined up from costumed dogs to haunted lighthouses.

Up north, the reputedly haunted Seul Choix Pointe Lighthouse in Gulliver hosts haunted tours Saturday night, with a non-scary hour before the frights begin at 7 p.m.

Mid-Michigan families can catch haunted hayrides at Silence Family Farms in Jackson on weekends, or bring their dogs to a doggie trick-or-treat in Mason on Saturday.

Ada hosts its Pumpkin Prowl on Friday, and Saturday brings a wave of trunk-or-treats from Holland and Grand Haven to Northville and Birmingham.
