$10B Data Center Floated near Holt

The Lansing Economic Area Partnership and Lighthouse Sustainability said Tuesday they’re considering a roughly $10 billion data center on 423 acres near Holt, but say community support will determine whether they move forward.

The partners say they’ll spend months gathering resident input to shape any future proposal, and they’ve filed no application or identified an end user. A one-year township moratorium on data centers runs until April.

A day later, Delhi Township severed its membership in LEAP. Manager Tracy Miller said officials learned of the plan alongside the news media and were acting to put residents first.

LEAP has said its open process, with no prior nondisclosure agreements, is meant to answer complaints about data center secrecy across Michigan.

MSU Trustee Sues Over Ethics Code

Michigan State University trustee Mike Balow filed a federal lawsuit naming the board chair and board secretary Wednesday, challenging an ethics code that restricts trustees from publicly criticizing majority board decisions.

The board adopted the revised code earlier this year and censured Balow and fellow trustee Rema Vassar in June after they refused to sign it. Balow says it unconstitutionally conditions trustee perks, like access to games, on his willingness to limit his criticism.

A university spokesperson disputed the trustees’ characterization of the code’s legal review, saying the board sought legal review before adopting it and that peer boards, including Wayne State’s, use similar rules.

It’s the second lawsuit filed by an MSU trustee in two weeks, amid a broader board conflict linked to MSU President Kevin Guskiewicz’s since-reversed resignation. Balow, who has also questioned MSU’s oversight of Spartan Ventures, is challenging the speech limits as unconstitutional.

Midland Again Named Top Retirement City

U.S. News & World Report named Midland the best U.S. city to retire for the second year in a row.

The mid-Michigan city was the only Michigan community in the top 10, earning the top spot for its affordability and retiree-friendly taxes.

U.S. News evaluated 859 cities on value, quality of life, desirability, and the job market, publishing its top 250. The city of about 42,000 is known for its walkability, access to nature, and economic strength. Midland is also the longtime home of Dow, the chemical maker headquartered there.

Affordability drove this year’s rankings as retirees weighed rising costs. Florida and Texas featured prominently in the full top 250.
