Trivia: Detroit-style pizza gets its crispy, cheesy edges from rectangular steel pans. What were those pans originally made for?

Answer: Auto factories. In 1946, Gus Guerra of Buddy’s Rendezvous on Detroit’s east side baked his first square pies in steel trays borrowed from local auto plants, where they’d been used to hold parts and catch dripping oil. Some pizzerias still bake in decades-old pans today.
