Whitmer Eases Diesel Rules for Farmers

Gov. Gretchen Whitmer declared a statewide energy emergency Monday and temporarily cleared farm and logging vehicles with qualifying plates to run on untaxed dyed diesel on public roads as Michigan diesel prices neared $6.50 a gallon.

Executive Order 2026-15 suspends two sections of the Motor Fuel Tax Act that restrict vehicles with farm or wood harvester plates from using dyed diesel, normally reserved for off-road equipment. The order expires when the emergency ends, but no later than Dec. 31.

The move follows President Trump’s Oct. 5 federal order directing temporary federal penalty relief for highway use of dyed diesel through year’s end. “We need to keep work moving and reduce pressure on the people who keep our state’s ag economy running,” Whitmer said in a statement.

The Michigan Association of Timbermen, among industry groups that urged the declaration, estimates it could save farmers and loggers upward of 50 cents a gallon through year’s end.

Michigan Sues Over Unemployment Funds

Michigan and 13 other states sued the U.S. Department of Labor over its cancellation of grants to modernize state unemployment systems, including about $4.2 million in funding already promised to Michigan.

The American Rescue Plan grants funded technology upgrades and fraud prevention, including efforts to improve the state’s Unemployment Insurance Agency. Across the 14 states, the department clawed back more than $45 million in unspent funding from a broader program that awarded more than $780 million.

In the suit, filed in the U.S. Court of Federal Claims, the states argue the terminations broke binding contracts and seek monetary damages. The department told states the grants “no longer effectuate [Department of Labor’s] priorities for its grant funding” and that it was reviewing pandemic-era funding for efficiency.

According to the lawsuit, the cancellations forced some states to halt projects, scale back improvements, or redirect funding from other programs.

Kalamazoo College Ranks Second in Michigan

Kalamazoo College ranked as the second-best college in Michigan in WalletHub’s 2027 rankings, trailing only the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor.

The personal finance site compared 500 schools on 30 metrics, from admission and graduation rates to cost and career outcomes. The Ann Arbor flagship led the state, ranking first in admission and graduation rates, while Princeton topped the national list.

Kalamazoo, a private liberal arts school of about 1,100 students, also ranks No. 74 nationally among liberal arts colleges by U.S. News. It edged out Michigan Tech, Calvin University, and the University of Detroit Mercy, which rounded out the state’s top five.

Michigan State University ranked ninth in Michigan, improving from 10th place in last year’s WalletHub rankings.
