Ex-Players Sue Michigan over Hazing

Sixteen former University of Michigan hockey players sued the university and its Board of Regents Wednesday, alleging coaches and staff knew about and concealed years of sexualized hazing.

The federal suit covers players in the program from 1984 to 2001 and describes forced drinking and forced genital shaving of freshmen. The plaintiffs are using pseudonyms, and the allegations haven’t been proven in court.

Plaintiffs say longtime coach Red Berenson knew and told the team to conduct hazing behind closed doors. Berenson coached Michigan from 1984 to 2017, and the suit says he ended freshman hazing in 2012 after years of knowing about it.

The university called the allegations disturbing but many elements of the complaint misleading, said it adopted an anti-hazing policy in 1982, and denied any liability.

The players are seeking damages and a court order requiring sexualized hazing prevention training for Michigan athletes.

Fire Levels Historic Lochmoor Clubhouse

A fire that spread through the attic of the Lochmoor Club’s clubhouse in Grosse Pointe Woods on Wednesday afternoon left the historic building a likely total loss.

Multiple departments responded, but crews couldn’t save the main building, part of which collapsed as the fire spread. Members hoped to salvage historic artifacts from the wreckage.

Mayor Arthur Bryant said the loss would be significant for the community and that the fire may have started in the kitchen, though investigators hadn’t confirmed a cause.

Members who watched the clubhouse burn said the club will come back. It’s unclear whether a weekend golf tournament benefiting children’s charities will go on.

Michigan Marks 25 Years since 9/11

Michigan’s five international border crossings will shut down for up to 30 minutes this morning as the state marks 25 years since the Sept. 11 attacks.

Traffic will be cleared before 8:46 a.m. at the Ambassador Bridge, the Blue Water Bridge, the Gordie Howe International Bridge, the Detroit-Windsor Tunnel, and the Sault Ste. Marie International Bridge. Taps will play as the flag is raised at each port of entry, followed by a moment of silence.

In Grand Rapids, Scouts are holding their 25th annual salute at the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Museum, where an honor guard lowers the flag at 7:15 a.m. and bells mark the times of the four attacks.

Kalamazoo will hold a memorial Mass for first responders at 6 p.m. and a stair climb at Wings Event Center, with another stair climb at LMCU Ballpark in Grand Rapids on Saturday and a Scout salute in Albion.

Forty-two people with Michigan ties were killed on Sept. 11, 2001.
